Kristie’s Do’s & Don’ts

Do: Tons of pumpkins

My motto when it comes to Halloween decor is that “you can never have enough pumpkins, whether real or fake.”

Don’t: Spend a ton of money

Places like Target, Amazon and the Japanese $1.50 Daiso Japan have some really cool Halloween decor. When I’m buying things for my apartment, I don’t care so much about the price because it’s only going to be up for a month. I’d rather splurge on shoes.

Do: Candles

I love having candles all over my apartment, 3-wick, 1-wick, mini candles…When I’m choosing Halloween themed candles, Bath & Body Works is my goto place. Tip: Just make sure the scents go together or it can become overwhelming.

Do: Tea lights

Tea lights are another great way to go. I have little glass candle holders that hold tea lights that I enjoy all year long, but they are especially festive this time of year with the rest of my fall decor. I also have  a silver glass pumpkin that I put a tea light in and the sparkle adds a beautiful ambiance. I’ll light them all when I’m watching a movie and it gives off a fantastic glow and coziness.

You can find similar votive tea light holders on Amazon.

Don’t: Do big displays

I don’t like big Halloween displays, I feel like it looks tacky and overwhelming. I think grouping together a few small items (like pumpkins, a ceramic ghost, etc.) looks a lot cuter.

Don’t: Stick to just the typical orange and black.

I don’t necessarily stick to the main Halloween colors. Pink is my favorite color and I’m not afraid to incorporate that. Also add in white, black, brown, gold, purple etc.

Do: Gothic decor like skulls

I’m a huge fan of skulls, some I even leave up all year round and I love adding more this time of year. Just don’t go overboard with them and overwhelm your apartment.

Nara’s Do’s and Don’ts

Do: Stock up on Pumpkin Spice home interiors that express your love for #PSL

You will be so happy you did after waiting all year for pumpkin goodness; candles, door mats, hanging signs, potpourri, coffee mugs, pillows.

Pumpkins: Tanaka Farms | Halloween skull mug: Amazon.

Don’t: Buy spider cobwebs as decor

They are messy, difficult to hang, and look like fur balls.

Do: Hang a cute fall wreath or door sign on your door

The fall wreath goes a long way as it can be used during Thanksgiving and it screams “It’s Fall!” in your home.

Don’t: Display inflatable pumpkins or ghosts

Your neighbors will judge you and they are a little tacky.

Don’t: Waste the pumpkin you carve

Your pumpkin should be perfect to display. To prevent your pumpkin from molding, fill a spray bottle with 3 tablespoons of bleach and water. Spray your pumpkin evenly.

PS: Save the seeds and roast them for a nutritious snack!

Do: Spray scented potpourri around your house

It smells lovely, decorative, and long lasting.

Don’t: Buy fake blood

It’s messy and impossible to remove stains.

Do: Bring the decor to your office

Halloween decor shouldn’t be limited to just your home…decorate your desk and office space. I purchased a cute set of LED lights for $3 at Target. Go for orange, purple, red, and yellow colors for an eerie vibe. Most lights come in Halloween shapes such as pumpkins, spiders, bats, etc.

Don’t: Buy Halloween decorations that purposely fall down

Example: Hanging, fuzzy spiders. No one wants a giant spider falling on them before they reach for the candy.

Don’t: Decorate to the point where your decor is gruesome

It can be disturbing to some people so avoid hanging “dead” bodies from trees.
