June is National Fruit and Vegetable Month, which means new initiatives to educate people about the importance of having a healthy and balanced diet full of fresh nutrient-rich plant matter! This week I visited a few farmers markets in the area to show you how beautiful and delicious fresh produce can be.
It Starts with One Recipe
If the idea of incorporating so much produce into your diet is intimidating, simply take it step by step. Pick one day out of the week to use all fresh ingredients to make something yummy. You can even prepare some salads to eat throughout the week. You’ll fall in love with the way you feel when you eat right and want to do it all the time!
It's much easier to see which fruit and veggies are in season when visiting a market, resulting in lower prices and fresher food. Check out the photos of avocados, raspberries, and blackberries, which are all in season and can be picked up fresh, at a market for a bargain price.
Every Market is Different
For a list of farmers markets in Los Angeles check out this interactive map provided by the LA Times. The images here were taken at the Silverlake Farmers Market, and the Larchmont Village Sunday Farmers' Market. Stop by for a lovely morning out, and explore the numerous shops and eateries on Larchmont Boulevard. The Silverlake market on Saturday had many beautiful crafts, and even vintage and thrift clothing set-ups. I found the Larchmont market to be much more convenient to get to, however, it also held a much smaller retail section.
Explore Your Options
Each market is unique, and provides different experiences each time you visit. Did you happen to find multiple markets near you, or can’t decide? Look up reviews of each to find one that suits your needs. I highly recommend checking out as many as you can over time.
