Eat: Voodoo Doughnut – 100 Universal City Plz, Universal City, CA 91608

Voodoo Donuts (Time Out)Voodoo Donuts 2voodoo doughnuts interior

Being a huge fan of gothic, pink and sweets, I’ve always wanted to try Voodoo Doughnuts. They have locations in Portland, Denver, Austin, Taiwan, and now—Los Angeles. They recently opened up a shop at  Universal CityWalk. Their soft opening was on March 9th with limited hours, but expect their grand opening at the end of the month.

Watch: American Crime – ABC, Sundays at 10pm

I’m pretty disappointed that Big Little Lies will be ending soon, so I need my fill of new binge worthy TV. Right now I’m watching Bates Motel, which will sadly be ending after this season and I’m a huge fan of the Emmy award winning anthology series American Crime. Each season has a new plot with most of the same cast (Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Regina King, and W. Earl Brown), and revolves around a different scandal / mystery and how it affects people of different races, religions, and social classic. Season 3 shows the struggle of undocumented immigrants sneaking into the US from Mexico and the hardships that they face, another plot in the series involves a young girl and boy being sex trafficked.

Read: How To Murder Your Life: A Memoir by Cat Marnell

How To Murder Your Life

I’ve always been a fan of Cat Marnell’s unapologetic writing. In between bringing us the best eyeliners and eye shadows for top fashion magazines, Cat was railing Adderall, smoking dust, and doing whatever other drugs she could get her hands on. Told by her boss Jane Pratt of XoJane to either go to rehab or get fired…she chose to quit. Soon after, she began to write a column called “Amphetamine Logic” for Vice. In 11 articles she details her drug use and sexcapades.

Her book “How To Murder Your Life” was just released and it’s on the New York Times best sellers list. It details her days at a New England prep school, interning at various fashion magazines, and her exploits of doctor shopping, pill popping, illegal drug use, nights out in New York City…all the while trying to keep it together as a beauty editor for XoJane, Lucky, Glamour, Self, and Nylon. This is surely a poolside read.

Do: Melrose Trading Post –  Fairfax High School, 7850 Melrose Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90046. $3

melrose trading post

One of my favorite things about LA are the flea markets, like the Melrose Trading Post. Held every Sunday from 9am-5pm, the Fairfax Flea Market carries a huge variety of vintage clothing, antiques and collectables, home decor and furniture, one-of-a kind items, artwork, crystals and  minerals, purses, vinyl, handmade jewelry, as well as new labels like my favorite jewelry line Vida Kush. Get here early because things go fast. I like to start my day of treasure hunting by first going to Blu Jam Cafe for breakfast. Then I’ll Uber there because parking can be a hassle, although they do have a valet lot for $5. The vendors are cash only, so bring plenty because you’re going to wish you brought more.

See: T2 Trainspotting

Sequels are usually not as good as originals, but I’m really, really, really, hoping T2 Trainspotting will live up to the hype. Set 20 years later, Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to Edinburgh from Amsterdam and reunites with his old friends Spud, Sick Boy, Franco and Tommy to find that they haven’t escaped their drug-fueled past.

Listen: The Shins – Heartworms

“In the years since their surge of popularity in the early noughties, the Shins have more or less been whittled down to a James Mercer solo project. This record, his first in five years, certainly has the markings of a personal voyage. As well as being self-produced, it is full of candid, heartfelt anecdotes mixed with committee-free experimentation. New wave influences ripple throughout; Rubber Ballz has psychedelic qualities; Mildenhall is an Americana track that recalls his teen years in the UK and starting to discover music; the mechanical vocals in the verse of Cherry Hearts sound as if he’s channelling a robot. Name for You – inspired by his three daughters – finds him in paternal mode, giving a pep talk: “They’re just afraid of you speaking your mind.” Heartworms is an album of tinkering and pootling, the sound of a man reminiscing on life, referencing his favorite records – less rock star, more bloke living out his hobby from the comfort of a suburban garage. “–The Guardian

Look Out For: Mean Girls: A Novel – September 2017

mean girls novel

Mean Girls was my movie back in the day. I remember going to the theater dressed like Regina George where I suddenly had a desire to splurge at Charlotte Russe and Wet Seal, buying tons of pink mini skirts (don’t judge, it was 2004). Every generation has that chick flick that continues to be enjoyed by future generations, like Valley of the Dolls or The Heathers. I’m dying to know what The Plastics have been up to. I would like a Mean Girls sequel but until then I’ll wait for the book, which is due out in September.
