Summer Nights in Los Angeles: Why I Love Staying In

On a typical summer night with my hectic schedule, I’m usually writing, editing or responding to my overflowing inbox. When I’m not doing that, I’m squeezing in time at the gym (usually later in the evening), or if I have the time catching up on my favorite TV shows. I find it important to go off track every once in a while and switch it up a bit. My boyfriend and I try to, at least once a week have one of those amazing LA summer nights. It doesn’t have to be much, or cost a lot of money, in fact some of my favorites are when we don’t leave our apartment building.

Dinner with A View

We’ll start by making dinner. I’ll usually plan this during the day and then walk down the street to Whole Foods and stock up on ingredients. Being summer, my favorite meal to cook is veggie burgers and Mexican Corn on the Cob aka Elotes, which is a popular street vendor dish. Both are really simple to make and taste so good. We get everything ready in our apartment and then we head down to the 10th floor pool and grill area.

Late Night Swim

Once we’re done cooking we sit and enjoy our dinner with a glass of wine. Sometimes we go into the jacuzzi or the pool for a late night swim. We are fortunate enough to live in Downtown Los Angeles which gives us breathtaking views of the city skyline. The beautiful skyline is one of the reasons that makes staying home so enjoyable.

Netflix and Chill

When we are done on the pool deck we go back up to our apartment (clean up the mess) and usually watch a movie on Plex or Netflix. Sometimes we’ll binge watch TV, but lately we’ve been watching different things. My boyfriend is going to law school in January so he’s into watching old episodes of shows like The Practice and Boston Legal, whereas, I just finally watched Orange Is the New Black and recently became obsessed with the new show Gypsy.

Nightly Skincare Routine

Before bed I’ll do my nightly skin routine no matter how exhausted I am, which involves thoroughly removing all traces of makeup. When I was younger there would be times when I’d be so tired that I’d just crash, but after hearing the damage it does to your skin I force myself to do my skincare routine. I start by using Ole Henriksen So Nurturing Cleansing Clothes, followed by Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser. When my face is still wet, I apply Art Naturals Retinol Serum combined with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C and then I apply La Mer Moisturizing Cream.

Unwind

Usually by this time it’s around 12am and I’m trying to force myself to become tired. I used to go on my computer which only made trying to fall asleep harder. Hours later I’d look at the clock and see it’s 3:30am and know that I need to be up in a few hours. Now, I’ll light a candle–right now I’m loving Voluspa’s Prosecco Rose scent and the crystal jar is so pretty. I’ll put on a pair of my favorite pajamas (usually Wildfox Couture), and I’ll read a book for 30-45 minutes. By this time I’m finally relaxed enough to want to go bed. I put the AC down low, turn the lights off, put my Slip Silk sleep mask on and drift off to sleep. Sweet Dreams.
