All Things August: What to See, Buy, Do, Eat and Listen to in Los Angeles
August To Do List:
August is the last official month of summer and in our monthly series All Things August, we bring you the adorable new Hello Kitty skincare line by Peter Thomas Roth. Dine at Downtown Los Angeles's new food spot, Corporation Food Hall. Watch the new crime-thriller Ozark on Netflix. Take a look at the colorful coffee table book by artist Donald Robertson. Celebrate Labor Day Weekend by attending the LA County Fair. Reminisce on the pop culture of the 2000’s by viewing all the celebrity scandals of the decade. And unwind by listening to Lana Del Rey’s new album, “Lust For Life.”
Who doesn’t love Hello Kitty? Beauty brand Peter Thomas Roth has teamed up with everyone’s favorite Sanrio character to create three new products. The pink limited-edition line consists of Rose Repair Gel Mask; Rose Balancing Essence Water and Rose Repair Cleansing Gel.
The collection is bubblegum pink, but besides it being totally cute, its formulated with plant stem cell technology and contains a bunch of different rose extracts which are designed to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dullness and dehydration.
There are tons of benefits. The gel mask has a cooling gel which helps to perk up the overall look of your skin. The repair balancing essence waters contains Hyaluronic Acid which helps increase hydration. The cleansing gel contains Glycolic Acid which helps rid your face of dead skin cells so that you’ll see a clearer more even complexion. It doesn’t matter what type of skin you have, you’ll certainly see results with this line.
Now you have a reason to stay in this weekend and have a spa night.
Downtown Los Angeles is in the middle of an economic boom. Everywhere you look new restaurants, galleries and stores are popping up. The newest edition is a boutique eatery that will host nine stalls, a bar and an espresso stand. It will be located in the Corporation Building and just down the street from Grand Central Market.
Corporation Food Hall’s Instagram released the name of the restaurants that will be bringing you their delicious food. Some of them already have locations in other parts of Los Angeles. You can look forward to dining at Funculo--a brand-new pasta place; Buddha Belly--serving Southeast Asian cuisine; Pig Pen Delicacy--bringing you burgers, fries and nachos; Poke 2 Go--serving up poke and rice; Tacos Tu Madre--a blend of Mexican and Korean BBQ with some American favorites like street dogs, On The Thirty--carrying fancy Italian dishes, Bardonna--serving coffee, tea, breakfast, sandwiches and snacks and Soom Soom--providing you with fast casual Mediterranean cuisine.
They haven’t released the official opening date, but they are scheduled to open up this summer.
Binge watching is opening up a whole new way that we enjoy TV. Why wait a week when you can watch one episode after another, after another? That thought has made me seek out TV shows that I can overindulge on. My new favorite show is Ozarkon Netflix, which has been said to have some similarities to Breaking Bad. It stars Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) and Laura Linney (Mystic River), as husband and wife who live a privileged lifestyle. Bateman’s character is a financial planner who gets involved in a money laundering scheme and he must pay off his debt to a Mexican Drug Lord. This thriller will keep you on the end of your couch as you say to yourself, “just one more episode” and before you know it it’s 4am and you have to be up in three hours.

The LA County Fair kicks off a 24 day festival starting Labor Day Weekend. Held in Pomona CA, the annual event has so many things to do, see and try. Let's start with their concert series that you can purchase tickets to like, “I Love The Nineties Tour” featuring Salt n Peppa, All-4-One, Coolio and Color Me Badd. You can see other artists perform throughout the fair like Boyz II Men, Babyface, Patti LaBelle, Queen Latifah, Fifth Harmony, Styx, Kansas, Chicago and many more.
The festival is known for their variety of foods to try with over 300 different options. There’s over 70 rides to experience, 40 games to play and they’re introducing a new Ferris wheel this summer. For those that aren’t into the carnival type stuff, you can shop ‘till you drop by browsing the over 500 vendors selling a variety of unique stuff. Feel like ice skating, you can do that in “The Iglo”, with nightly DJs spinning while you skate. Another cool thing to see is the “Jurassic Plant Exhibit” which features over40 prehistoric creatures on display. Are you a fan of Lewis Carroll’s mesmerisingnovel, Alice in Wonderland? If so, “Wonderland: A Floral Fairy Tale” is a must see display which tells the story through a huge array of stunning flowers. Check out their website to see the rest of the neat exhibits that will be coming this September.
There was a time when Juicy Couture bedazzled sweatsuits, Von Dutch trucker hats, Ugg boots, Christian Dior saddle bags and Ed Hardy clothing filled your closet (or you were wishing that it did). Back when Paris and Nicole were BFFL and you tuned into The Simple Life just to see what they were wearing. You would read the tabloids to keep up with their latests scandals and arrests and to see how other celebrity “It girls” were behaving, like they were on an never ending episode of Bad Girls Club. Like Lindsay Lohan who started her descent of arrests and drug addiction by first, trying to run a car off the road, or Mischa Barton who went from The O.C. to getting a DUI to being 5150ed to blaming that on dental surgery. Do you miss those times? Okay, maybe not the clothing styles from back then...
You can relive it all by attending Nicole Richie’s 2007 Memorial Day BBQ: The Exhibit. In collaboration with Thnk 1994 Museum, @popculturediedin2009 is bringing back all the scandals with a museum pop-up. The actual location is in Brooklyn, so if you’re going to be in NYC at all this summer check it out. It started on July 29th and goes until September 10th. Luckily for those who aren’t able to make it, you can view the pop-up here. Also, the museum gift shop sells some pretty kickass stuff that you can order online.
Being obsessed with all things Lana Del Rey, her new album “Lust For Life” is my summer anthem. Her dark haunting voice, combined with chill beats is perfect for relaxing on the beach. The album easily transitions into the music you play when it starts to get cooler and you’ve traded your Frosé for a chai latte. The 16 song album features guest appearances by A$AP Rocky “Summer Bummer”, The Weeknd “Lust For Life”, Stevie Nicks “Beautiful People Beautiful Problems” and Sean Lennon “Tomorrow Never Came”.
